We are proud to announce our new Behind the Curtain series, which will bring new plays by local playwrights to Chicago stages. The Behind the Curtain series begins this January with Jerald Raymond Pierce’s one act adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District.
The Behind the Curtain initiative was conceived as a way to expand the work of Fury’s popular Short Attention Span Theater series, which annually presents eight new, 15-minute works by playwrights from around the country. Behind the Curtain will take this series a step further: Chicago playwrights will have the opportunity to see their work performed in an intimate space and presented with the passion that defines Fury Theatre.
Vanya borrows four of the central characters from Chekhov's original, taking an intimate look at the obstacles between them and what they most desire. Losing none of Chekhov’s brilliant tragi-comedy and benefiting from the strong adaptive writing of Mr. Pierce, this adaptation will draw the 25-seat-limited audience into the action, as both stage and seats are arranged on Chase Park’s proscenium theater.
